Baby book vs memory book app: which is right for your family?

By Delia Lusk · Blog

A sister and brother lie together on a rug, smiling and pointing at photos in their family book.

Your mom probably had a baby book for you — a padded cover, a lock of hair taped inside and a few pages filled in with careful handwriting. Today there are apps that promise to do the same job on your phone. So which is better? Honestly, it depends on your family. Here's a fair look at both.

The traditional baby book

There's real charm in a paper baby book. Your handwriting, a hospital bracelet tucked into a pocket, a little footprint in ink. It's tactile, and it feels like an heirloom from day one.

  • Pros: beautiful to hold, no screens, easy to keep keepsakes inside
  • Cons: photos must be printed and stuck in, only one copy exists, hard to share with family far away, and pages often stay blank after the first few months

The biggest challenge is effort. Most baby books are lovingly filled for the first six months and then quietly forgotten. Not because parents don't care, but because getting photos off a phone, printed and into a book is a lot of steps with a baby on your hip.

The memory book app

A memory book app lives where your photos already are: on your phone. You can save a moment in seconds, while it's happening.

  • Pros: quick to add memories, photos stay in full quality, easy to share with family, prompts remind you what to write, and nothing is lost if a book gets damaged
  • Cons: it's on a screen, and you need to trust the app with your family's photos

That last point matters. Before choosing an app, check that it's private by default, that you can export everything, and that it follows local privacy law. In South Africa, that's POPIA.

What about cost?

A good-quality paper baby book costs a few hundred rand, plus printing photos to stick inside. Apps vary: many have a free tier and a paid plan. Chapter Moments is free for one child and up to 50 memories, and the Family plan is R249 a year for unlimited children and memories, family sharing and email reminders. Sharing with family

This is where apps shine. If Gran lives in Durban and the godparents are overseas, a paper book on your shelf doesn't help them much. With an app you can invite family to view, or even add their own photos and stories. In Chapter Moments you choose who's a Contributor and who's a Viewer, and only you as the owner can delete anything.

The best of both: an app that prints

You don't actually have to choose. Many families use an app day to day, then print a book when they're ready — for a birthday, the end of a school year, or as a gift for their child's 18th. You get the ease of saving memories on your phone and the joy of a real book on the shelf.

That's how Chapter Moments works. You record memories as they happen, then choose “One year”, “Custom dates” or “Everything so far” and preview your Memory Book page by page. Printed books are launching soon, from R399 softcover and R649 hardcover.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose a paper baby book if you love crafting, have time to print photos, and don't need to share it widely.
  • Choose a memory book app if you're busy, take most photos on your phone, and want family involved.
  • Choose an app that prints if you want both convenience now and a keepsake later.

Whichever you pick, the most important thing is to start. Even a few memories a month add up to a beautiful story. For ideas, see 50 easy things to write in a baby book, or read how to keep memories safe when your phone is full. Questions? Our FAQ has answers.
